Network Bands & Device Compatibility : CommsMobile
Overview
CommsMobile operates on the Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network, which delivers wide coverage across Australia using Telstra’s 4G and 5G spectrum.
To ensure reliable service (calls, SMS, data, and access to 000 emergency services), customers need a device that supports the right network bands and technologies, especially after the closure of Telstra’s 3G network on 28 October 2024.

Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network Bands
The Telstra Wholesale network operates on these frequency bands:
-
4G / LTE
-
Band 28 – 700 MHz (key for coverage indoors and in rural areas)
-
Band 3 – 1800 MHz
-
Band 7 – 2600 MHz
-
-
5G
-
n5 – 850 MHz
-
n78 – 3500 MHz
-
⚠️ If a device does not support Band 28 (700 MHz), it may experience reduced coverage, especially in buildings or remote areas.
3G Shutdown & Impact
-
Telstra’s 3G network closed on 28 October 2024.
-
Devices that rely on 3G for calling or emergency access are blocked from connecting to the Telstra (including Wholesale) network.
-
Some devices that are not blocked may still have reduced performance if they lack VoLTE, VoWiFi, or key 4G/5G bands.
Device Capability Checker
Telstra Wholesale provides a Device Capability Checker.
-
Enter the first 8 digits of your device’s IMEI (dial
*#06#to see it). -
The tool will confirm if the device is blocked or if it has any limitations.
If your device is blocked, you must upgrade to a 4G/5G device that supports the required bands.
Enabling VoLTE & VoWiFi
Since 3G is no longer available, VoLTE (Voice over 4G) and VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) are required for reliable calling. Without these, you may not be able to make voice calls or access 000 in some areas.
On iOS (iPhone)
-
Go to Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data
-
Enable 4G, VoLTE On
-
-
For WiFi Calling: Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling > On
On Android (may vary by model)
-
Open Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet) > Mobile Network
-
Enable VoLTE Calls or 4G Calling
-
-
For WiFi Calling: Settings > Connections (or Phone app settings) > Wi-Fi Calling > On
What To Do if a Device Isn’t Fully Compatible
-
Update software/firmware to the latest version
-
Enable VoLTE and WiFi Calling as shown above
-
If still experiencing poor service or blocked, upgrade to a fully compatible device
Important Notes
-
Compatibility affects not just day-to-day coverage, but also emergency calling.
-
Even if a device is “not blocked,” missing Band 28 or lacking VoLTE can cause call drops, patchy coverage, or failed emergency access.
-
For best experience, use a device that supports all key Telstra Wholesale bands and both VoLTE & VoWiFi.
