Voice Calling Features: VoLTE & VoWiFi (Wifi Calls)

Published:

Purpose / Summary

This article explains the voice calling features available to Comms Mobile customers, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi).

These technologies provide improved voice quality, faster call setup, and uninterrupted service where traditional mobile coverage may be weak.

An added benefit for customers is that VoWiFi can also be used while overseas — allowing them to make and receive Australian domestic calls through Wi-Fi as if they were in Australia. Calls to international destinations (IDD) remain unsupported over VoWiFi.

This guide helps partners and resellers understand how to configure, troubleshoot, and escalate VoLTE / VoWiFi-related issues.

1. Overview of Calling Technologies

  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE) enables voice calls to run over the 4G network, improving call clarity and setup speed while allowing data to remain active during calls.

  • VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi) allows the handset to place and receive calls using an available Wi-Fi network when mobile signal is weak or unavailable.

  • Comms Mobile supports both VoLTE and VoWiFi on compatible postpaid services and approved handsets.

  • Customers with both features enabled can move between mobile and Wi-Fi seamlessly where conditions permit.

2. Customer Use Cases

  • Indoor or low-coverage areas: VoWiFi provides stable calling via home or office Wi-Fi.

  • Seamless transition: Calls automatically move between VoLTE and VoWiFi when both are active.

  • Travel scenarios: Customers overseas can use VoWiFi to call Australian numbers as if they were in Australia.

  • Poor 4G coverage: Enable VoWiFi for consistent call performance.

3. Device Configuration Guide

5. Partner Checklist Before Escalation

Verify all items before raising a support ticket:

  • ✅ Device supports VoLTE and VoWiFi (Australian variant).

  • ✅ Active Comms Mobile postpaid SIM.

  • ✅ Latest software and carrier updates.

  • ✅ Both VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling enabled.

  • ✅ Tested on alternate Wi-Fi (if relevant).

  • ✅ Coverage verified on Comms Mobile Coverage Map  (Not Required for Call over WiFi)

  • ✅ Checked known network status via Telstra Outages Tool.(Not Required for Call over WiFi)

6. Escalation to Comms Channel Support

If the issue persists after completing the checklist, raise a ticket with:

  • Customer name and service number.

  • Handset make / model / software version.

  • Detailed symptoms and error messages.

  • Whether the fault affects VoLTE, VoWiFi or both.

  • Troubleshooting steps performed and test results.

Our support team will review and engage network engineering as required.

7. Additional Notes for Partners

  • VoWiFi can be used overseas to call Australian numbers, these calls are treated as local domestic calls.

  • International dialling (IDD) is not supported via VoWiFi.

  • Emergency calls placed over VoWiFi while abroad will route to Australian emergency services.

  • It is strongly recommended that partners ask the customer about their main usage locations (home, work, travel routes) and check those areas using the Comms Mobile Coverage Map before onboarding. This ensures that the customer has adequate coverage after switching to Comms Mobile and reduces the chance of early port-outs due to coverage differences.
