iPhone Messaging Issues After SIM Swap : Guidance for Partners
When customers swap SIMs (e.g. new service activation, port-in, or replacement), they may report that messages are showing as “Not Delivered”.
It’s important to distinguish between SMS/MMS (carrier responsibility) and iMessage (Apple service):
-
If SMS/MMS are not working → follow the checks below. If still unresolved, log a ticket with CommsChannel.
-
If SMS/MMS are working but iMessage is not → this is an Apple/iOS issue. The troubleshooting steps below are provided as an assistance guide only. These cases should not be logged with CommsChannel.
-
Test SIM in Another Device – Place the customer’s SIM in a known working handset.
-
If SMS works in the second handset → issue is device/iOS related (iMessage or device config).
-
If SMS does not work in the second handset → proceed with network/SMS checks.
-
-
Restart the iPhone and toggle Airplane Mode to clear network cache.
-
Check coverage – ensure the device has a stable mobile signal.
If SMS is still not working after these checks → log a ticket with CommsChannel Helpdesk, including number, device details, and steps already performed.
Step 2: If SMS Works but iMessage Fails
Advise the customer to check the following on their iPhone:
Quick Fix:
-
Restart iPhone and toggle Airplane Mode.
-
Check internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).

-
Send & Receive Configuration – In Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, confirm the correct phone number is ticked.
-
Carrier Settings Update – Go to Settings > General > About. If prompted, install update.
Advanced Options
-
Reset Network Settings – Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Factory Reset (last resort) : only attempt Factory Reset if recommended by a qualified Apple or IT technician.-
Apple Support – For unresolved iMessage cases, advise customer to contact Apple directly.
Note For Partners:
-
Only log tickets with CommsChannel if SMS is not functioning on multiple handsets.
-
iMessage issues are outside carrier scope, partners should manage these directly with the customer or Apple.
-
Always confirm troubleshooting steps taken before escalation.
