CommsMobile 1.0 to 2.0 — Key Changes & Migration Reference

Published:

Overview

CommsMobile Version 1.0 has been available since 2023. From 1 June 2026, all new CommsMobile services are provisioned on Version 2.0 only. Existing 1.0 customers remain on 1.0 until their services are migrated.

This article covers what changes for customers moving from 1.0 to 2.0 — what improves, what works differently, and what partners need to communicate before migration begins.

⚠️ CommsMobile 1.0 and 2.0 are separate platforms running on separate systems. Migration is not a simple plan swap — it requires new SIM cards and a porting process.

What Improves in 2.0

MMS

Version 1.0 caps MMS at 2,000 per month. Version 2.0 includes unlimited MMS on all plans.

International Calling (IDD)

Version 1.0 IDD is plan-tier dependent — lower tier plans (4G-S, 4G-M) have no IDD at all, and higher tier plans have different destination lists. Version 2.0 includes IDD on all Voice plans with a consistent 15-destination list including mobile variants, and international SMS and MMS are included within the IDD pack.

1.0 PlanIDD Destinations
4G-S, 4G-MNot included
4G-L10 destinations: China, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, UK, USA
5G-XL15 destinations: Bangladesh, Canada, China, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, UK, USA

Version 2.0 includes IDD on all Voice plans to: China, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, Vietnam — including mobile variants.

📝 Partners moving customers from 1.0 4G-S or 4G-M plans to any 2.0 Voice plan will gain IDD. Customers on 1.0 5G-XL will lose access to Bangladesh, Canada, and Japan, which are not in the 2.0 IDD list.

Plan Range

Version 1.0 offers 4 Voice & Data plans. Version 2.0 offers 26 plans across Standalone (Voice & Data + Data Only) and Pooling (Voice & Data + Data Only), with data allowances from 10GB to 400GB.

Pooling Plans

Version 1.0 has no pooling capability. Version 2.0 introduces Pooling Plans — up to 300 services sharing a single data pool. For business customers where data gifting was the workaround for uneven usage, pooling plans are a more robust alternative.

Roaming — Bill Shock Protection

PAYG roaming is disabled in Version 2.0. Customers must activate a travel pack, which eliminates unexpected roaming charges. Pack activation is simpler too — customers receive a welcome SMS on arrival and reply to activate, with no portal login required.

SIM Cards & Platform Compatibility

CommsMobile 1.0 and 2.0 operate as separate platforms. SIM cards are not interchangeable between the two.

  • Customers moving to 2.0 require new SIMs — either an eSIM activated via the Comms Portal, or a physical SIM ordered through your Account Manager

  • Customers retain their existing phone numbers — a standard porting process applies

  • There is no "silent" migration — a deliberate action is required per service

Billing & Plan Management Changes

The most operationally significant differences between 1.0 and 2.0 are in how billing, plan changes, and cancellations are handled. Partners should communicate these to customers before migration to avoid surprises.

Billing Cycle

Version 1.0Version 2.0
Billing cycleVariable — tied to the activation date of the first service provisioned for a customer account. Check the portal for the specific renewal date.Fixed — 28th to 27th of each month for all services. Bills issued at the start of the following month.
Plan activationProrated based on remaining days in the customer's billing cycleProrated based on remaining days until the 27th
Plan disconnectionProrated — a credit is applied to the next billNot prorated — the service is billed through to the 27th of the current billing cycle, regardless of when cancelled
Plan changesChanges can be made at any time. The prorated difference is applied to the next bill.Changes can only be submitted on the 27th of each month (system-enforced). Changes are irreversible once submitted — the carrier is charged immediately. One change per billing cycle.

What This Means in Practice

  • Switching a customer mid-cycle to 2.0: The new 2.0 service is prorated from activation date to the 27th. There is no gap in service.

  • Cancelling a 2.0 service mid-cycle: The customer is billed through to the 27th regardless of when they cancel. No credit applies. This is different from 1.0 where a credit was issued.

  • Plan changes on 2.0: Partners must confirm the correct plan with the customer before submitting — changes can only be made on the 27th and are irreversible once submitted.

  • Critical situations: If a customer faces a genuine mid-cycle issue requiring urgent intervention, contact your Account Manager to review options on a case-by-case basis.

Data Gifting

Data gifting — where data is transferred between services — is available in Version 1.0 but not available in Version 2.0.

For existing 1.0 customers who rely on gifting, two paths forward are worth discussing:

  • Migrate to 2.0 Pooling Plans — Pooling plans allow multiple services to share a single data pool. Services with uneven usage benefit from a shared pool without requiring manual gifting.

  • Remain on 1.0 temporarily — Existing 1.0 services retain gifting capability until they are migrated. No new services can be provisioned on 1.0 from June 2026.

⚠️ Customers with Data Only plans cannot purchase roaming packs on Version 2.0.

Data Banking

Data banking is available on both versions for eligible plans.

  • 1.0: Data banking available on all Voice & Data plans

  • 2.0: Data banking available on Standalone plans only — not available on Pooling plans

  • 2.0 Standalone data bank limits: 500GB for 4G plans, 1,000GB for 5G plans

📝 On 2.0, customers downgrading a Standalone plan forfeit accumulated data bank balance. Plan changes are only possible on the 27th.

⚠️ Partners migrating customers from 1.0 to 2.0 should review the databank transfer rules before selecting a target plan. The deadline to preserve a customer’s accumulated databank is 1 September 2026. See: CommsMobile Databank Transfer — 1.0 to 2.0 Migration Rules

Frequently Asked Questions

Do customers need a new SIM card to move to 2.0?

Yes. CommsMobile 1.0 and 2.0 are separate platforms and SIM cards are not interchangeable. Each service moving to 2.0 requires either an eSIM activated via the Comms Portal, or a physical SIM ordered through your Account Manager. Customers retain their existing phone numbers.

What happens to data gifting when customers migrate?

Data gifting is not available on 2.0. Customers using gifting on 1.0 retain that capability until their services are migrated. For businesses with uneven usage across services, Pooling Plans 2.0 are the recommended alternative — they share a data pool without requiring manual gifting.

Can customers keep their existing phone numbers?

Yes. Moving to 2.0 includes a standard porting process. Customers retain their existing numbers.

Why can my customer no longer get a refund when they cancel a service?

Version 2.0 does not prorate disconnections. Services are billed through to the 27th of the current billing cycle regardless of when the cancellation is submitted. This applies to all cancellation types — voluntary, non-payment, port-out, and end of contract. Version 1.0 issued a prorated credit on disconnection.

My customer wants to change their plan — can they do it now?

On Version 2.0, plan changes can only be submitted on the 27th of each month. This is a system-enforced restriction — the change function is not available on other dates. Changes are irreversible once submitted. If a customer has an urgent need before the 27th, contact your Account Manager to review options.

My customer is going overseas — how do they activate a roaming pack on 2.0?

When they arrive in a supported destination, they receive a welcome SMS. They reply to that SMS to activate a travel pack — no portal login required. PAYG roaming is disabled on 2.0, so a pack must be activated before using data or voice internationally.

My customer uses a SIM for 4G/5G backup — can they do this on 2.0?

No. Using CommsMobile SIMs as 4G/5G backup devices is a prohibited use case on both 1.0 and 2.0.

Does 2.0 include IDD on lower-tier plans?

Yes — Version 2.0 includes IDD on all Voice plans, including the entry-level 4G plans. In Version 1.0, the 4G-S and 4G-M plans did not include IDD at all. Note that 2.0 does not include Bangladesh, Canada, or Japan — these were destinations on the 1.0 5G-XL plan but are not available in 2.0.

What is the billing cycle in 2.0?

Version 2.0 uses a fixed billing cycle: 28th to 27th of each month for all services. Version 1.0 billing cycles are variable — tied to the activation date of the first service provisioned for a customer account, visible in the portal.
